Deflategate, meet hackgate.
News of the latest big-league sports scandal broke on Tuesday when the FBI announced that it is investigating whether St. Louis Cardinals officials hacked into the computer databases of their rivals, the Houston Astros.
If those allegations are true, this would be the first major incident of corporate espionage in the world of American sports. It would also give the Cardinals access to the inner workings of the Astros's Moneyball-like data-driven strategy.
It's an embarrassing moment for the Cardinals, who have the best record in the MLB so far this season and have 11 World Series championships to their name.
Why would they risk it all? Here to explain is Joshua Green, a senior national correspondent for Bloomberg Businessweek who wrote about the Astro's strategy for a 2014 feature on the team.
